THE CHARACTER
OF A HAAPPY LIFE

How happy is he born or taught,
That serveth not another’s will
Whose armour is his honest thought,
And simple truth his utmost skill.
जन्म या शिक्षा
से वह व्यक्ति कितना खुश होता है जो दूसरों की इच्छा के अनुसार कार्य नहीं
करता । जिसका सुरक्षा कवच
उसकी ईमानदार सोच होता है , तथा सरल सत्य ही उसकी सर्वोत्तम योग्यता होती है।
Whose passions not his masters are;
Whose soul is still prepar’d for death,
Untied unto the world by care
Of princely love or vulger breath.
उसकी तीव्र इच्छाएँ उसकी स्वामी
नहीं होती है (अर्थात वह वह अपनी इच्छाओं को नियंत्रण मे रखता है। ) वह मृत्यु के लिए सदैव तैयार रहता है । वह
सांसारिक चिन्ताओं से परेशान नहीं रहता है । वह न तो राजा की कृपा की इच्छा करता
है और न साधारण लोगों की आलोचना की चिन्ता करता है ।
Who hath his life from rumours freed
Whose conscience is his strong retreat
Whose state can neither flatterers feed
Nor ruin make oppersers great.
उसका जीवन अफवाहों से मुक्त रहता है । उसकी
अन्तरात्मा ही उसका दृढ़ शरणस्थल है । अर्थात् वह अपनी आत्मा की आवाज के अनुसार कार्य
करता है । न ही चापलूसी से उसे प्रभावित किया जा सकता है और न ही
उसका विनाश दमन करने वालों
को महान नहीं बना सकता है ।
Who envies none that chance doth raise,
Nor vice; who never understood
How deepest wounds are given by praise;
Nor rules of state, but rules of good.
वह व्यक्ति किसी से घृणा नही
करता है करता जिसने संयोग से प्रगति की है । वह यह कभी नहीं समझता कि
प्रशंसा से कितने गहरे घाव दिये जाते हैं अर्थात् झूठी प्रशंसा से वह प्रभावित नहीं होता
। राज्य के नियमों की परवाह नहीं करता बल्कि
वह अच्छाई के नियमों का पालन करता है ।
Who God doth late and early pray,
More of His grace than gifts to lend;
And entertains the harmless day
With a well-chosen book or friend.
वह प्रात : तथा सायं ईश्वर की प्रार्थना,प्राप्ति की अपेक्षा उसकी कृपा - के लिए अधिक करता
है ,(अर्थात वह किसी फल प्राप्ति की इच्छा से नहीं
करता ।) वह अपना दिन किसी अच्छी पुस्तक के पढ़ने या मित्र के साथ बिताता है ।
This man is freed from servile bands
Of hope to rise, or fear to fall,
Lord of himself, though not of lands,
And having nothing, he hath all.
ऐसा व्यक्ति गुलामी के बन्धनों से मुक्त होता
है । उसे न तो ऊँचा उठने की आशा होती है । और न गिरने का भय रहता है । यद्द्पि वह सांसारिक सम्पत्ति का स्वामी न हो लेकिन वह
अपने मन का स्वामी होता है । उसके पास
कुछ न होते हुए भी सब कुछ होता है ।
Central Idea of the Poem
The poet describes
the qualities of a really happy man . A happy man is honest and truthful . He
is the master of his passions . He is not afraid of death. He does not keen for the love of the prince and not care the
criticism of the common people . He life is free from rumours . He follows the voice of
his conscience . He does not care for false flattery . He is not jealous of
anyone ' s progress . He remembers God day
and night . He passes his time in the company of a good book or a good friend .
He does not care for rise or fall in life . He is rich in heart and is Lord of
himself and keeps content in all situations.
