About the poet

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (February 27, 1807 – March 24, 1882) was an American poet and educator and also was one of the most widely known and best-loved American poets of the 19th century.

Central Idea of the Poem -The poet says that life is real and earnest so it should not be wasted in joy and sorrow. In our life we should be courageous not like be dumb driving cattle  so we should be up and doing facing every difficulty that comes before us our way of life should inspire others to be brave.

Life is real ! Life is honest !

And the grave is not its goal .

'' Dust thous art, to dust returnest, ''

Is not spoken of the soul .

 जीवन वास्तविक है। जीवन गंभीर है। और जीवन का उद्देश्य कब्र नहीं है आत्मा के विषय में यह नहीं कहा गया है कि तुम मिट्टी हो और मिट्टी में ही मिल जाओगे।

Not enjoyment and not sorrow,

 Is our destined end or way ;

But to act that each tomorrow

 Finds us farther than today,                                                                                                                 

हमारा पहले से ही निश्चित उद्देश्य अथवा मार्ग आनंद प्राप्त करना या दुख झेलना नहीं है। हमारा उद्देश्य इस प्रकार कार्य करना है जिससे कि हम आज की अपेक्षा कल और आगे उन्नति के पथ पर अग्रसर हो।

In the world,s broad field of battle,                                                                                

 In the bivouac of life.                                                                                             

Be not like dumb, driven cattle;                                                                                      

 Be a hero in the strife!                                                                                   

विश्व के विशाल युद्ध स्थल में सिपाहियों के खुले शिविर जैसे जीवन में मूर्ख और नियंत्रित पशुओं की तरह मत बनो बल्कि संघर्ष में हीरो के समान संघर्ष करो

Let us, then, be up and doing,                                                                                                                     With a heart for any fate ;

Still achieving, still pursuing,                                                                  Learn to labor and to wait.                                                                                

 इसलिए हमें पूरे हृदय से खड़े होकर काम में लग जाना चाहिए बिना भाग की चिंता किए हुए  और अधिक उपलब्धि  प्राप्त करते हुए तथा और अधिक प्राप्ति के लिए हमें लगातार काम करते हुए परिश्रम करना चाहिए।  हमे मजदूरों से सीखना चाहिए जो दिन भर बिना भाग्य की चिंता किए हुए परिश्रम करते हैं। अर्थात हमे धैर्य रखना चाहिए।
