The Tale of Melon City
Stanza 1
In the city of which I sing
जिस शहर का मैं वर्णन कर रहा हूँ,
There was a just and placid King.
वहाँ एक न्यायप्रिय और शांत स्वभाव का राजा था।
The King proclaimed an arch should be
राजा ने घोषणा की कि एक मेहराब बनाई जानी चाहिए,
Constructed, that triumphally
जो भव्य रूप से
Would span the major thoroughfare
शहर के मुख्य मार्ग के आर-पार फैली हो,
To edify spectators there.
ताकि उसे देखने वाले लोग प्रभावित और प्रसन्न हों।
Stanza 2
The workmen went and built the thing.
मजदूरों ने जाकर उस मेहराब का निर्माण किया।
They did so since he was the King.
उन्होंने ऐसा इसलिए किया क्योंकि वह राजा का आदेश था।
The King rode down the thoroughfare
राजा मुख्य मार्ग पर सवारी करते हुए गए
To edify spectators there.
ताकि वहाँ के दर्शकों को प्रसन्न और प्रभावित कर सकें।
Under the arch he lost his crown.
मेहराब के नीचे से गुजरते समय उनका मुकुट गिर गया।
The arch was built too low. A frown
मेहराब बहुत नीची बनाई गई थी। राजा के चेहरे पर शिकन
Appeared upon his placid face.
उनके शांत चेहरे पर दिखाई देने लगी।
The King said, ‘This is a disgrace.
राजा ने कहा, “यह बहुत अपमानजनक बात है।
The chief of builders will be hanged.’
मुख्य निर्माणकर्ता को फाँसी दी जाएगी।”
Stanza 3
The rope and gallows were arranged.
रस्सी और फाँसी का तख्ता तैयार किया गया।
The chief of builders was led out.
मुख्य निर्माणकर्ता को बाहर लाया गया।
He passed the King. He gave a shout,
वह राजा के पास से गुजरा और चिल्लाकर बोला,
‘O King, it was the workmen’s fault’
“हे राजा, यह मजदूरों की गलती थी।”
‘Oh!’ said the King, and called a halt
“ओह!” राजा ने कहा और कार्यवाही रोक दी।
To the proceedings. Being just
न्यायप्रिय होने के कारण,
(And placider now) he said, ‘I must
और अब कुछ अधिक शांत होकर उन्होंने कहा,
Have all the workmen hanged instead.’
“इसके बजाय सभी मजदूरों को फाँसी देनी होगी।”
Stanza 4
The workmen looked surprised, and said,
मजदूरों ने आश्चर्य से देखा और कहा,
‘O King, you do not realise
“हे राजा, आप यह नहीं समझ रहे हैं कि
The bricks were made of the wrong size.’
ईंटें ही गलत आकार की बनाई गई थीं।”
‘Summon the masons!’ said the King.
राजा ने कहा, “राजमिस्त्रियों को बुलाओ!”
The masons stood there quivering.
राजमिस्त्री वहाँ डर से काँपते हुए खड़े हो गए।
‘It was the architect...’, they said,
उन्होंने कहा, “यह वास्तुकार की गलती थी...”
The architect was summoned.
वास्तुकार को बुलाया गया।
Stanza 5
‘Well, architect,’ said His Majesty.
“तो वास्तुकार,” महाराज ने कहा,
‘I do ordain that you shall be
“मैं आदेश देता हूँ कि तुम्हें
Hanged.’
फाँसी दी जाए।”
Said the architect, ‘O King,
वास्तुकार ने कहा, “हे राजा,
You have forgotten one small thing.
आप एक छोटी-सी बात भूल गए हैं।
You made certain amendments to
आपने
The plans when I showed them to you.’
जब मैंने आपको नक्शे दिखाए थे, तब उनमें कुछ बदलाव किए थे।”
Stanza 6
The King heard this. The King saw red.
यह सुनकर राजा बहुत क्रोधित हो गए।
In fact he nearly lost his head;
वास्तव में, वे लगभग अपना आपा खो बैठे।
But being a just and placid King
लेकिन न्यायप्रिय और शांत राजा होने के कारण
He said, ‘This is a tricky thing.
उन्होंने कहा, “यह एक पेचीदा मामला है।
I need some counsel. Bring to me
मुझे सलाह की आवश्यकता है। मेरे पास
The wisest man in this country.’
इस देश के सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को लाओ।”
The wisest man was found and brought,
सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को खोजकर लाया गया,
Nay, carried, to the Royal Court.
बल्कि उसे उठाकर राजदरबार में लाया गया।
Stanza 7
He could not walk and could not see,
वह न तो चल सकता था और न ही देख सकता था,
So old (and therefore wise) was he —
क्योंकि वह बहुत बूढ़ा था और इसलिए बुद्धिमान माना जाता था—
But in a quavering voice he said,
लेकिन काँपती हुई आवाज़ में उसने कहा,
‘The culprit must be punished.
“अपराधी को दंड मिलना चाहिए।
Truly, the arch it was that banged
वास्तव में, वह मेहराब ही थी जिसने
The crown off, and it must be hanged’.
राजा का मुकुट गिराया था, इसलिए उसी मेहराब को फाँसी दी जानी चाहिए।”
Stanza 8
To the scaffold the arch was led
मेहराब को फाँसी के तख्ते तक ले जाया गया,
When suddenly a Councillor said —
तभी अचानक एक मंत्री ने कहा—
‘How can we hang so shamefully
“हम इतनी शर्मनाक तरीके से उस चीज़ को कैसे फाँसी दे सकते हैं
What touched your head, Your Majesty?’
जिसने महाराज के सिर को छुआ था?”
‘True,’ mused the King. By now the crowd,
राजा ने सोचा, “सही बात है।” तब तक भीड़
Restless, was muttering aloud.
बेचैन होकर जोर-जोर से बड़बड़ाने लगी थी।
Stanza 9
The King perceived their mood and trembled
राजा ने भीड़ के गुस्से को महसूस किया और डर गए।
And said to all who were assembled —
और वहाँ एकत्रित सभी लोगों से कहा—
‘Let us postpone consideration
“आइए, अभी विचार करना स्थगित कर दें
Of finer points like guilt. The nation
कि असली दोषी कौन है। देश
Wants a hanging. Hanged must be
फाँसी चाहता है। किसी न किसी को
Someone, and that immediately.’
तुरंत फाँसी दी जानी चाहिए।”
Stanza 10
The noose was set up somewhat high.
फाँसी का फंदा कुछ ऊँचाई पर लगाया गया।
Each man was measured by and by.
एक-एक व्यक्ति की लंबाई नापी गई।
But only one man was so tall
लेकिन केवल एक व्यक्ति ही इतना लंबा था
He fitted. One man. That was all.
कि वह फंदे के लिए सही था। केवल एक व्यक्ति।
He was the King. His Majesty
वह स्वयं राजा था। महाराज
Was therefore hanged by Royal Decree.
इसलिए शाही आदेश के अनुसार फाँसी पर लटका दिए गए।
Stanza 11
‘Thank Goodness we found someone,’ said
मंत्रियों ने कहा, “भगवान का शुक्र है कि हमें कोई मिल गया,
The Ministers, ‘for if instead
क्योंकि यदि ऐसा न होता,
We had not, the unruly town
तो यह उग्र जनता
Might well have turned against the Crown.’
राजसत्ता के विरुद्ध विद्रोह कर सकती थी।”
‘Long live the King!’ the Ministers said.
मंत्रियों ने कहा, “राजा अमर रहें!”
‘Long live the King! The King is dead.’
“राजा अमर रहें! राजा मर चुके हैं।”
Stanza 12
They pondered the dilemma; then,
उन्होंने इस समस्या पर विचार किया और फिर,
Being practical-minded men,
व्यावहारिक सोच वाले होने के कारण,
Sent out the heralds to proclaim
घोषणा करने के लिए संदेशवाहकों को भेजा,
(In His [former] Majesty’s name):
पूर्व महाराज के नाम पर:
‘The next to pass the City Gate
“जो अगला व्यक्ति शहर के द्वार से गुजरेगा,
Will choose the ruler of our state,
वही हमारे राज्य का शासक चुनेगा,
As is our custom. This will be
जैसा कि हमारी परंपरा है। यह
Enforced with due ceremony.’
पूरे विधि-विधान के साथ किया जाएगा।”
Stanza 13
A man passed by the City Gate.
एक व्यक्ति शहर के द्वार से गुजरा।
An idiot. The guards cried, ‘Wait!
वह एक मूर्ख था। पहरेदार चिल्लाए, “रुको!
Who is to be the King? Decide!’
राजा कौन बनेगा? फैसला करो!”
‘A melon,’ the idiot replied.
मूर्ख ने उत्तर दिया, “एक खरबूजा।”
This was his standard answer to
हर प्रश्न के लिए यही उसका सामान्य उत्तर था।
All questions. (He liked melons.)
सभी सवालों का। (उसे खरबूजे पसंद थे।)
Stanza 14
‘You
“अब आप
Are now our King,’ the Ministers said,
हमारे राजा हैं,” मंत्रियों ने कहा,
Crowning a melon.
और एक खरबूजे को ताज पहना दिया।
Then they led
फिर वे
(Carried) the Melon to the throne
उस खरबूजे को उठाकर सिंहासन तक ले गए
And reverently set it down.
और बड़े सम्मान के साथ उसे वहाँ रख दिया।
Stanza 15
This happened years and years ago.
यह घटना बहुत-बहुत वर्षों पहले हुई थी।
When now you ask the people, ‘So —
अब जब आप वहाँ के लोगों से पूछते हैं, “तो—
Your King appears to be a melon.
आपका राजा तो एक खरबूजा दिखाई देता है।
How did this happen?’, they say, ‘Well, on
यह कैसे हुआ?” तो वे कहते हैं, “यह
Account of customary choice.
हमारी परंपरागत पसंद के कारण हुआ।
If His Majesty rejoice
यदि हमारे महाराज
In being a melon, that’s OK
खरबूजा बने रहने में खुश हैं,
With us, for who are we to say
तो हमें कोई आपत्ति नहीं है, क्योंकि हम कौन होते हैं यह कहने वाले
What he should be as long as he
कि उन्हें क्या होना चाहिए, जब तक कि वे
Leaves us in Peace and Liberty?’
हमें शांति और स्वतंत्रता से रहने देते हैं।”
The principles of laissez faire

Seem to be well-established there.
वहाँ अच्छी तरह स्थापित प्रतीत होते हैं।”
