The Address
This short story is a poignant account of a daughter who goes in search of her mother’s belongings after the War, in Holland.
यह छोटी कहानी हॉलैंड में युद्ध के बाद अपनी माँ के सामान की तलाश में जाने वाली एक बेटी का एक मार्मिक वर्णन है।
When she finds them, the objects evoke memories of her earlier life.
जब वह उन्हें पा लेती है, तो वे वस्तुएँ उसके पुराने जीवन की यादें ताज़ा कर देती हैं।
However, she decides to leave them all behind and resolves to move on.
हालाँकि, वह उन सभी को पीछे छोड़ने का निर्णय लेती है और जीवन में आगे बढ़ने का संकल्प करती है।
‘Do you still know me?’ I asked.

The woman looked at me searchingly.

She had opened the door a chink.

I came closer and stood on the step.

‘No, I don’t know you.’
'नहीं, मैं तुम्हें नहीं जानती।'
‘I’m Mrs S’s daughter.’
'मैं मिसेस एस (Mrs S) की बेटी हूँ।'
She held her hand on the door as though she wanted to prevent it opening any further.
उसने दरवाज़े पर अपना हाथ इस तरह रखा हुआ था मानो वह इसे और ज़्यादा खुलने से रोकना चाहती हो।
Her face gave absolutely no sign of recognition.
उसके चेहरे पर पहचानने का बिल्कुल भी कोई भाव नहीं था।
She kept staring at me in silence.
वह चुपचाप मुझे घूरती रही।
Perhaps I was mistaken, I thought, perhaps it isn’t her.
शायद मुझसे गलती हुई थी, मैंने सोचा, शायद यह वह महिला नहीं है।
I had seen her only once, fleetingly, and that was years ago.
मैंने उसे केवल एक बार, झलक भर के लिए देखा था, और वह भी सालों पहले की बात थी।
It was most probable that I had rung the wrong bell.
इस बात की पूरी संभावना थी कि मैंने गलत घंटी बजा दी थी।
The woman let go of the door and stepped to the side.
महिला ने दरवाज़ा छोड़ दिया और एक तरफ हट गई।
She was wearing my mother’s green knitted cardigan.
उसने मेरी माँ का हरा बुना हुआ कार्डिगन पहना हुआ था।
The wooden buttons were rather pale from washing.
धोने के कारण उसके लकड़ी के बटन काफी हल्के (पीले) पड़ गए थे।
She saw that I was looking at the cardigan and half hid herself again behind the door.
उसने देखा कि मैं कार्डिगन को देख रही थी और उसने खुद को फिर से दरवाज़े के पीछे आधा छिपा लिया।
But I knew now that I was right.
लेकिन अब मैं जान गई थी कि मैं सही जगह पर थी।
‘Well, you knew my mother?’ I asked.
'वैसे, क्या आप मेरी माँ को जानती थीं?' मैंने पूछा।
‘Have you come back?’ said the woman.
'क्या तुम वापस आ गई हो?' महिला ने कहा।
‘I thought that no one had come back.’
'मुझे लगा था कि कोई भी वापस नहीं आया है।'
‘Only me.’
'केवल मैं।'
A door opened and closed in the passage behind her.
उसके पीछे गलियारे (passage) में एक दरवाज़ा खुला और बंद हुआ।
A musty smell emerged.
एक सीलन भरी/दुर्गंधयुक्त गंध बाहर आई।
‘I regret I cannot do anything for you.’
'मुझे खेद है कि मैं आपके लिए कुछ नहीं कर सकती।'
‘I’ve come here specially on the train. I wanted to talk to you for a moment.’
'मैं यहाँ ख़ास तौर पर ट्रेन से आई हूँ। मैं आपसे एक पल के लिए बात करना चाहती थी।'
‘It is not convenient for me now,’ said the woman.
'अभी मेरे लिए यह सुविधाजनक नहीं है,' महिला ने कहा।
‘I can’t see you. Another time.’
'मैं आपसे नहीं मिल सकती। फिर कभी।'
She nodded and cautiously closed the door as though no one inside the house should be disturbed.
उसने सिर हिलाया और सावधानी से दरवाज़ा बंद कर लिया, मानो घर के अंदर कोई परेशान न हो।
I stood where I was on the step.
मैं जहाँ थी, वहीं पायदान पर खड़ी रही।
The curtain in front of the bay window moved.
उभरी हुई खिड़की (bay window) के सामने का पर्दा हिला।
Someone stared at me and would then have asked what I wanted.
किसी ने मुझे घूरा और फिर पूछा होगा कि मुझे क्या चाहिए।
‘Oh, nothing,’ the woman would have said.
'ओह, कुछ नहीं,' महिला ने कहा होगा।
‘It was nothing.’
'कुछ भी नहीं था।'
I looked at the name-plate again.
मैंने नेम-प्लेट (नाम की पट्टिका) को फिर से देखा।
Dorling it said, in black letters on white enamel.
सफेद इनेमल पर काले अक्षरों में 'डॉर्लिंग' लिखा था।
And on the jamb, a bit higher, the number. Number 46.
और दरवाज़े के चौखट पर, थोड़ा ऊपर, नंबर था। नंबर 46।
As I walked slowly back to the station I thought about my mother, who had given me the address years ago.
जब मैं धीरे-धीरे स्टेशन की ओर वापस लौट रही थी, तो मैंने अपनी माँ के बारे में सोचा, जिन्होंने सालों पहले मुझे यह पता दिया था।
It had been in the first half of the War.
यह युद्ध के शुरुआती दौर की बात थी।
I was home for a few days and it struck me immediately that something or other about the rooms had changed.
मैं कुछ दिनों के लिए घर आई थी और मुझे तुरंत यह अहसास हुआ कि कमरों में कुछ न कुछ बदल गया था।
I missed various things.
मुझे कई चीज़ें गायब लगीं।
My mother was surprised I should have noticed so quickly.
मेरी माँ को आश्चर्य हुआ कि मैंने इतनी जल्दी ध्यान दे दिया।
Then she told me about Mrs Dorling.
फिर उन्होंने मुझे मिसेस डॉर्लिंग के बारे में बताया।
I had never heard of her but apparently she was an old acquaintance of my mother, whom she hadn’t seen for years.
मैंने उनके बारे में कभी नहीं सुना था लेकिन जाहिर तौर पर वह मेरी माँ की एक पुरानी परिचित थीं, जिन्हें उन्होंने सालों से नहीं देखा था।
She had suddenly turned up and renewed their contact.
वह अचानक आ पहुँची थीं और उनसे संपर्क दोबारा शुरू कर लिया था।
Since then she had come regularly.
तब से वह नियमित रूप से आने लगी थीं।
‘Every time she leaves here she takes something home with her,’ said my mother.
'हर बार जब वह यहाँ से जाती है, तो अपने साथ कुछ न कुछ घर ले जाती है,' मेरी माँ ने कहा।
‘She took all the table silver in one go.’
'वह एक ही बार में खाने की मेज़ की चाँदी के सभी बर्तन ले गई।'
‘And then the antique plates that hung there.’
'और फिर वहाँ लटकी हुई प्राचीन (एंटीक) प्लेटें।'
‘She had trouble lugging those large vases, and I’m worried she got a crick in her back from the crockery.’
'उन बड़े गुलदस्तों को घसीटकर ले जाने में उन्हें परेशानी हुई, और मुझे चिंता है कि बर्तन उठाने से उनकी पीठ में मोच आ गई होगी।'
My mother shook her head pityingly.
मेरी माँ ने सहानुभूति से अपना सिर हिलाया।
‘I would never have dared ask her.’
'मेरी तो उनसे ऐसा पूछने की कभी हिम्मत ही नहीं होती।'
‘She suggested it to me herself.’
'उन्होंने खुद ही मुझे इसका सुझाव दिया था।'
‘She even insisted.’
'यहाँ तक कि उन्होंने ज़िद भी की थी।'
‘She wanted to save all my nice things.’
'वह मेरी सभी अच्छी चीज़ों को सुरक्षित बचाना चाहती थीं।'
‘If we have to leave here we shall lose everything, she says.’
'अगर हमें यह जगह छोड़नी पड़ी तो हम सब कुछ खो देंगे, वह कहती हैं।'
‘Have you agreed with her that she should keep everything?’ I asked.
'क्या आप इस बात पर उनसे सहमत हो गई हैं कि वह सब कुछ अपने पास रखेंगी?' मैंने पूछा।
‘As if that’s necessary,’ my mother cried.
'जैसे कि यह कहना ज़रूरी हो,' मेरी माँ चिल्लाईं।
‘It would simply be an insult to talk like that.’
'इस तरह बात करना सीधे तौर पर उनका अपमान होगा।'
‘And think about the risk she’s running, each time she goes out of our door with a full suitcase or bag.’
'और उस ख़तरे के बारे में सोचो जो वह उठा रही हैं, हर बार जब वह हमारे दरवाज़े से भरा हुआ सूटकेस या बैग लेकर बाहर जाती हैं।'
My mother seemed to notice that I was not entirely convinced.
मेरी माँ को लगा कि मैं पूरी तरह से सहमत नहीं थी।
She looked at me reprovingly and after that we spoke no more about it.
उन्होंने मुझे तिरस्कार/डांट भरी नज़र से देखा और उसके बाद हमने इस बारे में कोई बात नहीं की।
Meanwhile I had arrived at the station without having paid much attention to things on the way.
इस बीच मैं रास्ते की चीज़ों पर ज़्यादा ध्यान दिए बिना ही स्टेशन पहुँच गई थी।
I was walking in familiar places again for the first time since the War, but I did not want to go further than was necessary.
युद्ध के बाद पहली बार मैं फिर से उन परिचित जगहों पर चल रही थी, लेकिन मैं ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा आगे नहीं जाना चाहती थी।
I didn’t want to upset myself with the sight of streets and houses full of memories from a precious time.
मैं एक क़ीमती समय की यादों से भरी सड़कों और मकानों के दृश्य देखकर खुद को दुखी नहीं करना चाहती थी।
In the train back I saw Mrs Dorling in front of me again as I had the first time I met her.
वापसी की ट्रेन में, मुझे मिसेस डॉर्लिंग का चेहरा फिर से अपने सामने दिखाई दिया, जैसा कि मैंने उन्हें पहली बार मिलने पर देखा था।
It was the morning after the day my mother had told me about her.
यह उस दिन की अगली सुबह की बात थी जब मेरी माँ ने मुझे उनके बारे में बताया था।
I had got up late and, coming downstairs, I saw my mother about to see someone out.
मैं देर से सोकर उठी थी और नीचे आते हुए मैंने अपनी माँ को किसी को बाहर छोड़ने जाते हुए देखा।
A woman with a broad back.
चौड़ी पीठ वाली एक महिला।
‘There is my daughter,’ said my mother.
'यह मेरी बेटी है,' मेरी माँ ने कहा।
She beckoned to me.
उन्होंने मुझे इशारा करके बुलाया।
The woman nodded and picked up the suitcase under the coat-rack.
महिला ने सिर हिलाया और कोट-स्टैंड के नीचे रखा सूटकेस उठा लिया।
She wore a brown coat and a shapeless hat.
उसने एक भूरा कोट और एक बेडौल सी टोपी पहनी हुई थी।
‘Does she live far away?’ I asked, seeing the difficulty she had going out of the house with the heavy case.
'क्या वह बहुत दूर रहती हैं?' मैंने पूछा, भारी सूटकेस के साथ उन्हें घर से बाहर निकलने में हो रही परेशानी को देखते हुए।
‘In Marconi Street,’ said my mother.
'मार्कोनी स्ट्रीट में,' मेरी माँ ने कहा।
‘Number 46. Remember that.’
'नंबर 46। इसे याद रखना।'
I had remembered it.
मुझे वह याद था।
But I had waited a long time to go there.
लेकिन मैंने वहाँ जाने के लिए एक लंबा इंतज़ार किया था।
Initially after the Liberation I was absolutely not interested in all that stored stuff, and naturally I was also rather afraid of it.
आज़ादी (मुक्ति) के बाद शुरुआत में मुझे उस जमा किए गए सामान में बिल्कुल भी दिलचस्पी नहीं थी, और स्वाभाविक रूप से मैं उससे थोड़ा डरती भी थी।
Afraid of being confronted with things that had belonged to a connection that no longer existed; which were hidden away in cupboards and boxes and waiting in vain until they were put back in their place again; which had endured all those years because they were ‘things.’
उन चीज़ों का सामना होने से डर, जो एक ऐसे रिश्ते/जुड़ाव से ताल्लुक रखती थीं जो अब अस्तित्व में नहीं था; जो अलमारियों और डिब्बों में छिपी हुई थीं और व्यर्थ में तब तक इंतज़ार कर रही थीं जब तक कि उन्हें फिर से उनकी जगह पर न रख दिया जाए; जिन्होंने इतने सालों तक सिर्फ इसलिए सहन किया क्योंकि वे 'चीज़ें' थीं।
But gradually everything became more normal again.
लेकिन धीरे-धीरे सब कुछ फिर से सामान्य होने लगा।
Bread was getting to be a lighter colour, there was a bed you could sleep in unthreatened, a room with a view you were more used to glancing at each day.
ब्रेड हल्के रंग की (बेहतर गुणवत्ता की) मिलने लगी थी, एक ऐसा बिस्तर था जहाँ आप बिना किसी ख़तरे के सो सकते थे, एक ऐसा कमरा था जिसके दृश्य को आप हर दिन देखने के आदी थे।
And one day I noticed I was curious about all the possessions that must still be at that address.
और एक दिन मैंने महसूस किया कि मैं उन सभी चीज़ों के बारे में जानने के लिए उत्सुक थी जो अभी भी उस पते पर होनी चाहिए थीं।
I wanted to see them, touch, remember.
मैं उन्हें देखना, छूना और याद करना चाहती थी।
After my first visit in vain to Mrs Dorling’s house I decided to try a second time.
मिसेस डॉर्लिंग के घर की अपनी पहली व्यर्थ यात्रा के बाद मैंने दूसरी बार कोशिश करने का फैसला किया।
Now a girl of about fifteen opened the door to me.
अब लगभग पंद्रह साल की एक लड़की ने मेरे लिए दरवाज़ा खोला।
I asked her if her mother was at home.
मैंने उससे पूछा कि क्या उसकी माँ घर पर हैं।
‘No’ she said, ‘my mother’s doing an errand.’
'नहीं,' उसने कहा, 'मेरी माँ किसी काम से बाहर गई हैं।'
‘No matter,’ I said, ‘I’ll wait for her.’
'कोई बात नहीं,' मैंने कहा, 'मैं उनका इंतज़ार कर लूँगी।'
I followed the girl along the passage.
मैं लड़की के पीछे-पीछे गलियारे में चली गई।
An old-fashioned iron Hanukkah candle-holder hung next to a mirror.
एक आईने के पास पुराने ज़माने का लोहे का हनूका (Hanukkah) मोमबत्ती-स्टैंड लटका हुआ था।
We never used it because it was much more cumbersome than a single candlestick.
हमने इसका इस्तेमाल कभी नहीं किया था क्योंकि यह एक अकेली मोमबत्ती के स्टैंड की तुलना में बहुत अधिक भारी/कठिन था।
‘Won’t you sit down?’ asked the girl.
'क्या आप बैठेंगी नहीं?' लड़की ने पूछा।
She held open the door of the living-room and I went inside past her.
उसने बैठक (living-room) का दरवाज़ा खुला रखा और मैं उसके पास से गुज़रकर अंदर चली गई।
I stopped, horrified.
मैं डरकर रुक गई।
I was in a room I knew and did not know.
मैं एक ऐसे कमरे में थी जिसे मैं जानती भी थी और नहीं भी जानती थी।
I found myself in the midst of things I did want to see again but which oppressed me in the strange atmosphere.
मैंने खुद को उन चीज़ों के बीच पाया जिन्हें मैं दोबारा देखना तो चाहती थी लेकिन उस अजीब माहौल में वे मुझे परेशान कर रही थीं।
Or because of the tasteless way everything was arranged, because of the ugly furniture or the muggy smell that hung there, I don’t know; but I scarcely dared to look around me.
या शायद जिस बेढंगे/अरुचिकर तरीके से सब कुछ सजाया गया था, बदसूरत फर्नीचर या वहाँ फैली सीलन भरी गंध के कारण, मुझे नहीं पता; लेकिन मुझमें अपने आसपास देखने की भी हिम्मत बमुश्किल हो रही थी।
The girl moved a chair.
लड़की ने एक कुर्सी खिसकाई।
I sat down and stared at the woollen table-cloth.
मैं बैठ गई और ऊनी मेज़पोष (table-cloth) को घूरने लगी।
I rubbed it.
मैंने उसे रगड़ा।
My fingers grew warm from rubbing.
रगड़ने से मेरी उंगलियां गर्म हो गईं।
I followed the lines of the pattern.
मैंने उसके डिज़ाइन (पैटर्न) की रेखाओं को देखा।
Somewhere on the edge there should be a burn mark that had never been repaired.
किनारे पर कहीं जलने का एक निशान होना चाहिए था जिसकी मरम्मत कभी नहीं की गई थी।
‘My mother’ll be back soon,’ said the girl.
'मेरी माँ जल्द ही वापस आ जाएँगी,' लड़की ने कहा।
‘I’ve already made tea for her. Will you have a cup?’
'मैंने उनके लिए चाय बना ली है। क्या आप एक कप लेंगी?'
‘Thank you.’
'धन्यवाद।'
I looked up.
मैंने ऊपर देखा।
The girl put cups ready on the tea-table.
लड़की ने चाय की मेज़ पर कप तैयार करके रख दिए।
She had a broad back. Just like her mother.
उसकी पीठ भी चौड़ी थी। बिल्कुल उसकी माँ की तरह।
She poured tea from a white pot.
उसने एक सफेद केतली से चाय डाली।
All it had was a gold border on the lid, I remembered.
मुझे याद आया कि उसके ढक्कन पर केवल एक सोने की सीमा (बॉर्डर) बनी हुई थी।
She opened a box and took some spoons out.
उसने एक डिब्बा खोला और कुछ चम्मचें निकालीं।
‘That’s a nice box.’ I heard my own voice.
'यह एक सुंदर डिब्बा है।' मैंने अपनी ही आवाज़ सुनी।
It was a strange voice.
यह एक अजीब आवाज़ थी।
As though each sound was different in this room.
मानो इस कमरे में हर ध्वनि अलग लग रही हो।
‘Oh, you know about them?’
'ओह, क्या आप उनके बारे में जानती हैं?'
She had turned round and brought me my tea.
वह मुड़ी और मेरे लिए चाय लेकर आई।
She laughed.
वह हँसी।
‘My mother says it is antique. We’ve got lots more.’
'मेरी माँ कहती हैं कि यह एंटीक (प्राचीन) है। हमारे पास ऐसी और भी बहुत सी चीज़ें हैं।'
She pointed round the room.
उसने कमरे की तरफ इशारा किया।
‘See for yourself.’
'आप खुद ही देख लीजिए।'
I had no need to follow her hand.
मुझे उसके हाथ के इशारे को देखने की ज़रूरत नहीं थी।
I knew which things she meant.
मैं जानती थी कि उसका इशारा किन चीज़ों की तरफ था।
I just looked at the still life over the tea-table.
मैंने केवल चाय की मेज़ पर रखी वस्तुओं के दृश्य (still life) को देखा।
As a child I had always fancied the apple on the pewter plate.
बचपन में मुझे जस्ते (pewter) की प्लेट में रखा सेब हमेशा बहुत पसंद आता था।
‘We use it for everything,’ she said.
'हम इसका इस्तेमाल हर काम के लिए करते हैं,' उसने कहा।
‘Once we even ate off the plates hanging there on the wall.’
'एक बार तो हमने दीवार पर लटकी हुई उन प्लेटों में खाना भी खाया था।'
‘I wanted to so much.’
'मेरी बहुत इच्छा थी।'
‘But it wasn’t anything special.’
'लेकिन उसमें कुछ ख़ास बात नहीं थी।'
I had found the burn mark on the table-cloth.
मुझे मेज़पोष पर जलने का वह निशान मिल गया था।
The girl looked questioningly at me.
लड़की ने मेरी ओर सवालिया नज़र से देखा।
‘Yes,’ I said, ‘you get so used to touching all these lovely things in the house, you hardly look at them any more.’
'हाँ,' मैंने कहा, 'आप घर की इन सभी प्यारी चीज़ों को छूने के इतने आदी हो जाते हैं कि आप उन पर बमुश्किल ही ध्यान देते हैं।'
‘You only notice when something is missing, because it has to be repaired or because you have lent it, for example.’
'आप केवल तब ध्यान देते हैं जब कोई चीज़ गायब होती है, उदाहरण के लिए क्योंकि उसकी मरम्मत होनी होती है या आपने उसे उधार दिया होता है।'
Again I heard the unnatural sound of my voice and I went on:
फिर से मैंने अपनी आवाज़ की अस्वाभाविक ध्वनि सुनी और अपनी बात जारी रखी:
‘I remember my mother once asked me if I would help her polish the silver.’
'मुझे याद है कि मेरी माँ ने एक बार मुझसे पूछा था कि क्या मैं चाँदी के बर्तनों को चमकाने (पॉलिश करने) में उनकी मदद करूंगी।'
‘It was a very long time ago and I was probably bored that day or perhaps I had to stay at home because I was ill, as she had never asked me before.’
'यह बहुत समय पहले की बात थी और शायद मैं उस दिन बोर हो रही थी या शायद बीमारी के कारण मुझे घर पर रहना पड़ा था, क्योंकि उन्होंने मुझसे पहले कभी ऐसा नहीं पूछा था।'
‘I asked her which silver she meant and she replied, surprised, that it was the spoons, forks and knives, of course.’
'मैंने उनसे पूछा कि उनका किस चाँदी से मतलब था और उन्होंने हैरान होकर जवाब दिया कि ज़ाहिर है चम्मच, काँटे और चाकू।'
‘And that was the strange thing, I didn’t know the cutlery we ate off every day was silver.’
'और अजीब बात यह थी कि मैं नहीं जानती थी कि जिन बर्तनों (cutlery) से हम हर दिन खाना खाते थे वे चाँदी के थे।'
The girl laughed again.
लड़की फिर से हँसी।
‘I bet you don’t know it is either.’ I looked intently at her.
'मुझे शर्त लगाने का यकीन है कि तुम भी नहीं जानती कि ये (तुम्हारे बर्तन) भी चाँदी के हैं।' मैंने उसकी ओर ध्यान से देखा।
‘What we eat with?’ she asked.
'जिनसे हम खाना खाते हैं?' उसने पूछा।
‘Well, do you know?’
'अच्छा, क्या तुम जानती हो?'
She hesitated.
वह हिचकिचाई।
She walked to the sideboard and wanted to open a drawer.
वह साइडबोर्ड (बर्तनों की अलमारी) की ओर गई और एक दराज़ (drawer) खोलना चाहती थी।
‘I’ll look. It’s in here.’
'मैं देखती हूँ। यह इसके अंदर है।'
I jumped up.
मैं झटके से उठी।
‘I was forgetting the time. I must catch my train.’
'मैं समय का ध्यान ही भूल रही थी। मुझे अपनी ट्रेन पकड़नी है।'
She had her hand on the drawer.
उसका हाथ दराज़ पर था।
‘Don’t you want to wait for my mother?’
'क्या आप मेरी माँ का इंतज़ार नहीं करना चाहतीं?'
‘No, I must go.’ I walked to the door.
'नहीं, मुझे जाना होगा।' मैं दरवाज़े की ओर बढ़ी।
The girl pulled the drawer open.
लड़की ने दराज़ खोल दिया।
‘I can find my own way.’
'मैं अपना रास्ता खुद तलाश सकती हूँ।'
As I walked down the passage I heard the jingling of spoons and forks.
जब मैं गलियारे से नीचे जा रही थी, तो मैंने चम्मचों और काँटों की खनक सुनी।
At the corner of the road I looked up at the name-plate.
सड़क के कोने पर मैंने ऊपर नेम-प्लेट (नाम पट्टिका) को देखा।
Marconi Street, it said.
उस पर लिखा था, मार्कोनी स्ट्रीट।
I had been at Number 46.
मैं मकान नंबर 46 पर थी।
The address was correct.
पता सही था।
But now I didn’t want to remember it any more.
लेकिन अब मैं इसे और याद नहीं रखना चाहती थी।
I wouldn’t go back there because the objects that are linked in your memory with the familiar life of former times instantly lose their value when, severed from them, you see them again in strange surroundings.
