About the Lesson
Arup Kumar Dutta is an Indian writer and journalist from Guwahati, Assam. He has written 16 books for adults and 17 adventure novels for young people . In 2014 he was awarded the Life Time Achievement Honour by Association of Writers and Illustrators for Children, New Delhi, the Indian chapter of the International Board of Books for Young People.[1] He has also won numerous awards including the Shankar's Award in 1979, conferred to mark The International Year of the Child.[2] He has been awarded the civilian award Padma Shri by Government of India in 2018.
About the Lesson
The lesson is about two friends - Pranjol and Rajvir who are travelling to Pranjol's hometown Assam for the summer vacation , Assam is known as the ' tea country . It has the largest concentra tion of plantations in the world . During their journey they discuss about the various legends that are known to have discovered tea . The story tells us about the popularity of tea as a beverage
III . Tea from Assam
Chai - Garam .... garam - chai , " a vendor called out in a high - pitched voice He came up to their window and asked , " Chai , sa'ab ? " “ Give us two cups , " Pranjol said . They sipped the steaming hot liquid . Almost everyone in their compartment was drinking tea too . " Do you know that over eighty crore cups of tea are drunk every day throughout the world ? " Rajvir said . " Whew ! " exclaimed Pranjol . " Tea really is very popular " The train pulled out of the station Pranjol buried his nose in his detective book again . Rajvir too was an ardent fan of detective stories , but at the moment he was keener on looking at the beautiful It was green , green everywhere . Rajvir had never seen so much greenery before . Then the soft green paddy fields gave way to tea bushes . " चाय - गरम ... गरम चाय " एक चाय वाला तेज़ आवाज में चिल्लाया वह उनकी खिड़की तक आया और पूछा , “ चाय साहब " " हमें दो कप दे दो " प्रांजल ने कहा । उन्होंने गरम चाय की चुस्कियाँ लीं । उनके डिब्बे में प्रत्येक व्यक्ति चाय पी रहा था । " क्या तुम जानते हो कि संसार में प्रतिदिन अस्सी करोड़ कप चाय पी जाती है ? राजवीर ने कहा । प्रांजल ने आश्चर्य व्यक्त किया । " " चाय वास्तव में ही बहुत लोकप्रिय है । " ट्रेन स्टेशन से बाहर निकली । प्रांजल ने फिर से जासूसी पुस्तक पढ़ना शुरू कर दिया राजवीर भी जासूसी कहानियाँ पढ़ने का शौकीन था परन्तु इस क्षण वह बाहर का सुन्दर दृश्य देखना चाहता था । सभी जगह हरियाली थी । राजवीर ने उतनी हरियाली पहले कभी नहीं देखी थी । तब हरे धान के खेतों की जगह चाय की झाड़ियों ने ले ली थी।
It was a magnificent view . Against the backdrop of densely wooded hills a sea of tea bushes stretched as far as the eye could see . Dwarfing the tiny tea plants were tall sturdy shade - trees and amidst the orderly rows of bushes busily moved doll - like figures . In the distance was an ugly building with smoke billowing out of tall chimneys . " Hey , a tea garden ! " Rajvir cried excitedly . Pranjol , who had been born and brought up on a plantation , didn't share Rajvir's excitement . " Oh , this is tea country now , " he said . " Assam has the largest concentration of plantations in the world . You will see enough gardens to last you a lifetime !
" यह एक भव्य दृश्य था । गहरे जंगलों वाली पहाड़ियों की पृष्ठभूमि में चाय की झाड़ियाँ फैली हुई थीं । जहाँ तक आँखें देख सकती थीं । छोटे चाय के पौधों को बौने ठहराते लम्बे छायाकार पेड़ थे और चाय की झाड़ियों की सीधी पंक्तियों के मध्य में व्यस्तता से घूमती हुई गुड़ियों जैसी आकृतियाँ दिखाई देती थीं । दूर एक भद्दी सी बिल्डिंग थी जिसमें चिमनियों में से धुंआ बाहर निकल रहा था । " हे . एक चाय बागान । " राजवीर उत्तेजना में चिल्लाया । प्रांजल , जो एक बागान में जन्मा और पला था , उसने राजवीर की उत्तेजना में हिस्सा नहीं लिया । उसने कहा “ ओह , यह चाय का देश है अब । " असम में संसार के सबसे अधिक बागानों की सघनता है । आपको यहाँ इतने अधिक बागानों की सघनता दिखाई देगी जितने अधिक आपको ठम्र भर तक दिखाई देगें ।
" I have been reading as much as I could about tea , " Rajvir said . " No one really knows who discovered tea but there are many legends . " " What legends ? " " Well , there's the one about the Chinese emperor who always boiled water before drinking it . One day a few leaves of the twigs burning under the pot fell into the water giving it a delicious flavour . It is said they were tea leaves . " Tell me another ! " scoffed Pranjol . " We have an Indian legend too . Bodhidharma , an ancient Buddhist ascetic , cut off his eyelids because he felt sleepy during meditations . Ten tea plants grew out of the eyelids . The leaves of these plants when put in hot water and drunk banished sleep " Tea was first drunk in China , " Rajvir added , " as far back as 2700 B.C ! In fact words such as tea , ' chai ' and ' chini ' are from Chinese . Tea came to Europe only in the sixteenth century and was drunk more as medicine than as beverage . " मैं चाय के बारे में इतना पढ़ता रहा हूँ जितना मैं पढ़ सकता था । " राजवीर ने कहा , “ वास्तव में कोई नहीं जानता कि चाय की खोज किसने की थी , परन्तु इसके बारे में अनेकों कहानियाँ हैं । " " कौन सी कहानियाँ ? " " एक है चीन के सम्राट के बारे में , जो हमेशा पानी पीने से पहले पानी को उबालता था । एक दिन बर्तन के नीचे जलती हुई टहनियों के कुछ पत्ते उबलते हुए पानी में गिर गए , जिससे पानी स्वादिष्ट बन गया । यह कहा जाता है कि वे चाय के पत्ते थे । " मुझे दूसरी सुनाओ प्रांजल ने उपहास किया । " हमारे पास एक भारतीय कहानी भी है । बोधीधर्मा , जो एक प्राचीन बौद्ध महात्मा था ने अपनी आँख की पलकें काट दी थी क्योंकि यह ध्यान के समय नींद महसूस करने लगा था । दस चाय के पौधे उसकी पलकों पर उग आए । इन पौधों के पत्तों को पानी में उबालकर पीया गया था और उससे नींद गायब हो गयी थी । " चाय सबसे पहले चीन में पी गई थी ' , राजवीर ने कहा , " 2700 ईस्वी पूर्व ! " वास्तव में ' टी ' शब्द चीनी भाषा के ' चाई और " चीनी ' शब्द से निकला है । यूरोप में चाय केवल 16 वीं शताब्दी में आई थी और इसको एक पेय की अपेक्षा दवा के रूप में अधिक प्रयोग किया जाता था ।
The train clattered into Mariani junction . The boys collected their luggage and pushed their way to the crowded platform . Pranjol's parents were waiting for them . Soon they were driving towards Dhekiabari , the tea - garden managed by Pranjol's father . An hour later the car veered sharply off the main road . They crossed a cattle - bridge and entered Dhekiabari Tea Estate . On both sides of the gravel - road were acre upon acre of tea bushes , all neatly pruned to the same height . Groups of tea - pluckers , with bamboo baskets on their backs , wearing plastic aprons , were plucking the newly sprouted leaves . Pranjol's father slowed down to allow a tractor , pulling a trailer - load of tea leaves , to pass . " This is the second - flush or sprouting period , isn't it , Mr Barua ? " Rajvir asked . " It lasts from May to July and yields the best tea . " You seem to have done your homework before coming . " Pranjol's father said in surprise . " Yes , Mr Barua , " Rajvir admitted . " But I hope to learn much more while I'm here . " रेलगाड़ी खड़खड़ाती हुई मरियानी जंक्शन पहुंची । लड़कों ने अपना सामान इकट्ठा किया और भीड़ भरे प्लेटफार्म पर अपना रास्ता बनाया । प्रांजल के माता - पिता उनका इन्तजार कर रहे थे । शीघ्र ही वे देकियाबाड़ी की तरफ यात्रा कर रहे थे , जहाँ पर प्रांजल के पिता का चाय बागान था । एक घण्टा बाद कार मेन रोड पर से मुड़ी । उन्होंने मवेशियों के पुल को पार किया और देकियाबाड़ी चाय बागान में पहुँच गये । पथरीले रोड के दोनों ओर चाय के पौधों से भरे कई एकड़ खेत थे , सभी पौधों की ऊँचाई एक जैसी काट - छाँटकर की गयी थी । चाय चुनने वाली औरतों के समूह अपनी पीठ पर बाँस की टोकरियाँ लिए , प्लास्टिक का लाबादा पहने हुए , नए फूटे हुए पत्तों को चुन रही थीं । प्रांजल के पिता ने गाड़ी की गति धीमी की ताकि एक ट्रैक्टर गुजर सके , जो ट्रेलर भर कर चाय के पत्ते ले जा रहा था । “ यह दूसरा कोपलों के फूटने का समय है , है - ना , मिस्टर बरूआ ? “ राजवीर ने पूछा " । यह मई से जुलाई तक समाप्त होता है । और सबसे अच्छी चाय की फसल प्रदान करता है । “ ऐसा लगता है कि तुमने आने से पहले अपना होमवर्क कर लिया था , प्रांजल के पिता ने आश्चर्य से कहा । " “ हाँ , श्रीमान् बरूआ , ” राजवीर ने स्वीकार किया । “ लेकिन मुझे विश्वास है कि मैं यहाँ रहते हुए कहीं ज्यादा सीख जाऊंगा । "
