Central Idea Of The Poem
The poet has deep love in animals hence he wishes to live with animals to experience a life where everyone is free of sins and sorrows . The most important theme of the poem is not to admire how good animals are , but to compare humans with them in order to focus on the flaws of their nature .

I think I could turn and live with animals ,
they are so placid and self - contain'd ,
I stand and look at them long and long .
कवि कल्पना करता कि काश मैं स्वयं में परिवर्तन लापता और पशुओं के साथ रह पाता । वे (पशु) बहुत शान्त व संयमी होते हैं । मैं खड़े होकर बहुत समय तक उन्हें देखता रहता है ।
They do not sweat and whine about their condition ,
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins ,
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God ,
कवि कहता है कि पशु मनुष्यों से अधिक व अच्छा जीवन जीते हैं । वे अपनी हालत के बारे में चितिंत नहीं होते हैं तथा रोती सी आवाज में शिकायत नहीं करते हैं । वे अंधेरे में लेटकर जागते हुए अपने पापों के लिए नहीं रोते हैं । वे ईश्वर के प्रति अपने कर्तव्यों के बारे में विचार विमर्श - करते हुए मुझको उबाते नहीं हैं
Not one is dissatisfied , not one is demented with the mania of owning things ,
Not one kneels to another nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago ,
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth . कोई भी अपने जीवन से असन्तुष्ट नहीं होता है , न ही कोई चीजों के स्वामी बनने के विषय में पागल होता है । कोई जानवर किसी दूसरे जानवर के सामने घुटने भी नहीं टेकता है । न ही कोई जानवर हजारों वर्ष पूर्व जीवन जीने वाले अपनी किस्म ( प्रजाति ) के समक्ष घुटने टिकाता है । इस सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी पर कोई भी जानवर आदरणीय या दुखी नहीं है , अर्थात् सभी जानवर एक जैसे हैं , उनमें कोई भेदभाव नहीं है ।
So they show their relations to me and I accept them ,
They bring me tokens of myself , they evince
them plainly in their possession
I wonder where they get those tokens ,
Did I pass that way huge times ago and negligently drop them ? इसलिए वे मेरे (मनुष्यों) के प्रति अपना प्रेम प्रदर्शित करते हैं और ( मनुष्य) भी उसे स्वीकार कर लेते हैं । पशु मनुष्यों के प्रति उनके प्रेम का उपहार लाते हैं । कवि कहता है कि पशु साधारण रूप से उसके अपने गुण उसे दिखाते हैं । वह बहुत उत्सुकतापूर्वक सोचता है कि उन्हें वे उपहार ( गुण ) कहाँ से मिले । वह सोचता है कि कहीं ऐसा तो नहीं कि बहुत समय पहले वह वहाँ से गुजरा हो और उससे वे उपहार गिर गए हों । वह कहना चाहता है कि मनुष्यों ने अपने मानवता के गुण खो दिए हैं परन्तु पशुओं में वे गुण हैं ।
