Central idea of the Poem
In this poem the poet expresses the anger and helplessness of a caged tiger that lives in a zoo The poet explains what his life could be if had been a free animal The poet has tried to explain about the condition of animals that are caged by human beings for their own fun , This poem constrasts A Tiger in The Zoo with the tiger in its natural habitat . The poem moves from the zoo to the jungle , and back again to the zoo Read the poem silently once , and say which stanzas speak about the tiger in the zoo , and which ones speak about the tiger in the jungle .
He stalks in his vivid stripes
The few steps of his cage ,
Onpads of velvet quiet ,
In his quiet rage .
(कवि एक चिड़िया घर मे बंद बाघ की दशा को देखकर कर विलाप करता और सोचता है की मानव ने कैसे अपने मनोरन्जन के लिए किसी की स्वतन्त्रता छीन लिया है और कल्पना करता है अगर वह स्वंतंत्र होता तो क्या क्या करता ।)
वह (बाघ )अपनी चमकीली धारीदार पट्टियों के साथ अपने पिजड़े मे गद्देदार तलवों से अपने शांति भरे क्रोध मे कुछ कदम चलता है
He should be lurking in shadow ,
Sliding through long grass
Near the water hole
Where plump deer pass .
उसे तो तालाब के किनारे लंबी लंबी घास के छाया मे सरक कर घात (छिपना) लगाना चाहिए जहां मोटे ताज़े हिरण गुजरते हैं।
He should be snarling around houses
At the jungle's edge ,
Baring his white fangs , his claws ,
Terrorising the village !
उसे तो ( बाघ ) जंगल के छोर पर स्थित घरों के चारों ओर गुर्राना चाहिए ।
और अपने लम्बे तीक्ष्ण सफेद दाँतों तथा अपने पंजो को दिखाते हुए गाँव के लोगों को भयभीत करना चाहिए ।
But he's locked in a concrete cell ,
His strength behind bars ,
Stalking the length of his cage ,
Ignoring visitors .
लेकिन उसे तो कंकरीट की मजबूत कोठरी में कैद कर दिया गया है । उसकी शक्ति को सलाखों के पीछे बन्द कर दिया गया है । वह आगन्तुकों की परवाह न करते हुए अपने पिंजरे की पूरी लम्बाई में चलता रहता है ।
He hears the last voice at night ,
The patrolling cars ,
And stares with his brilliant eyes
At the brilliant stars .
लेकिन वह ( बाघ )रात को गश्त के लिए घूमती हुई कारों की अंतिम आवाज को सुनता है । और अपनी चमकदार आँखों से चमकीले तारों को घूरता है ।
